Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron finished fourth in this week's race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the South Point 400. Starting from the ninth position, Byron quietly had one of the best cars of the day and was highly competitive. In the first stage, Byron ran inside the Top 10 for most of the stage but also took a two-tire call on pit road for track position during a caution for an accident with Austin Dillon on lap 64. As a result, Byron placed fourth at the end of the first stage and gained stage points. In the second stage, Byron continued to run inside the Top 10, made clean pit stops, and captured even more stage points as he ended the stage in third behind Christopher Bell and Martin Truex Jr. During the final stage, Byron continued his strong run and followed a similar race strategy to eventual runner-up Christopher Bell by pitting mid-way through the stage. As other drivers were slowing down and saving fuel, Byron eventually caught up to fourth, finishing there at the end of the race and just missing out on a podium finish. As the Cup Series moves onto Homestead-Miami Speedway for the second race of the Round of 8 in the playoffs, Byron is 27 points ahead of the cutoff line at a track where he has one win and three top-10 finishes in six starts.--Sean Engel - RotoBaller
