Tyler Soderstrom Hears Name Called By A's

The Oakland Athletics selected Turlock High School catcher Tyler Soderstrom with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft on Wednesday. His dad, Steve Soderstrom, was the sixth overall pick in 1993 and pitched in the big leagues, so the bloodline is there. The 18-year-old was the second catcher off the board last year. He's an athletic, left-handed hitting backstop whose bat is superior to his glove. Soderstrom has the athleticism to play third base or the outfield and makes consistent, loud contact with the bat. His rawness in terms of blocking and game management could cause a position switch down the line, but there's no question that his bat carries his value going into the next level. Oakland might've reached for him a bit here in hopes that they can get him out of his commitment to UCLA.
