Steven Souza Jr. Heading To Houston
4 years agoThe Houston Astros agreed to an undisclosed deal with free-agent outfielder Steven Souza Jr. on Saturday, according to a source. The 31-year-old hit just .148 in 27 at-bats in 11 games for the Chicago Cubs in the shortened 2020 season after missing all of the 2019 campaign while recovering from surgery to fix an ACL tear, LCL tear, partial PCL tear and a posterior lateral capsule tear in his left knee. The right-handed hitter has a .232 career batting average with 71 home runs, 203 RBI and a .737 OPS in six major league seasons with the Nationals, Rays, Diamondbacks and Cubs. Souza slugged a career-high 30 home runs and stole 16 bases for the Rays back in 2017 but has played in just 83 games in the last three years due to injuries. He'll compete for a roster spot in spring training, but Houston has some outfield openings, so Souza could be a low-cost deep league sleeper if he earns regular playing time in Houston.
