Pavin Smith in Line to be Everyday Starter at First Base
Josh Naylor to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, the D-backs will likely turn to Pavin Smith (oblique) as their everyday starter at first base going forward, even though he's currently on the injured list with a strained right oblique, according to MLB.com's Manny Randhawa. The 29-year-old lefty hitter recently resumed taking dry swings, but it's unclear when he'll begin a minor-league rehab assignment or when he'll return to the big-league roster with added playing time. And when Smith does return to Arizona, he might only be starting at first base when the team faces right-handed pitchers. The former seventh overall pick in 2017 out of Virginia has hit .261/.371/.446 with an .817 OPS, eight homers, 28 RBI and 33 runs in 222 at-bats, but he has just 17 at-bats against southpaws in 2025.
