2 weeks agoThe Baltimore Orioles starting rotation on Opening Day is expected to be headlined by right-handers Corbin Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez and Dean Kremer, with Tyler Wells and read more...
2 weeks agoBaltimore Orioles catching prospect Samuel Basallo (elbow) has a right-elbow stress fracture, according to general manager Mike Elias. Basallo is catching in spring training but isn't throwing. He'll be the designated hitter in Grapefruit League action, but he probably won't catch in games until late April. The 19-year-old backstop is going to be brought along slowly and isn't going to break camp with the big-league club. He'll most likely be assigned to Double-A Bowie to kick off the 2022 season and will try to work his way up to Triple-A Norfolk later in the year after impressing with a .313/.402/.551 slash line with 20 long balls in three minor-league stops in 2023. The left-handed-hitting catcher is one of Baltimore's top prospects.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Jake Rill
2 weeks agoBaltimore Orioles left-hander John Means (elbow) is a month behind the other pitchers at the start of spring training and might not be ready for Opening Day this year. Unless Means makes some significant progress in the next couple of weeks, he seems destined to open the 2024 regular season on the injured list, joining fellow starter Kyle Bradish (elbow). The 30-year-old southpaw had a setback with his surgically repaired left elbow last October and is still working past it as camp begins. Means had Tommy John surgery in April of 2022 and has made only six starts in the last two years for the O's. He was an All-Star back in 2019, but given the fact that he's thrown only 31 2/3 innings in the big leagues since the start of 2022, Means is going to be on an innings limit this year whenever he gets going.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Roch Kubatko
2 weeks agoBaltimore Orioles right-hander Kyle Bradish (elbow) will go on the injured list with a UCL sprain in his right elbow. The 27-year-old has received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his arm and will begin a throwing program on Friday. This is really scary news for anyone that was hoping to target Bradish in their fantasy drafts because if rest and rehab don't work, he'll likely need to have Tommy John surgery, which would cause him to miss the entire season. He had a breakout 2023 campaign with the O's, posting a 2.83 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 168 strikeouts and 44 walks in 168 2/3 innings over his 30 starts, but he's off to a bad start already in 2024. Even with no injury in the picture, Bradish was a candidate for some regression this year after having a fortunate .270 BABIP.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Roch Kubatko
2 weeks agoBaltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson (oblique) is dealing with some oblique soreness at camp, but it's not viewed as serious. It doesn't sound like Henderson will be in danger of missing Opening Day this year, but the 22-year-old might be delayed in Grapefruit League action as a precaution. The O's have every reason to ease last year's American League Rookie of the Year in so that he won't miss games to begin the regular season. In his first full big-league campaign in 2023, Henderson was a force, slashing .255/.325/.489 with an .814 OPS, 28 home runs, 29 doubles, nine triples, 82 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 100 runs scored in 150 games. If his plate discipline slowly starts to improve, perhaps even Henderson will be able to help fantasy managers in batting average.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Roch Kubatko
2 weeks agoThe Tampa Bay Rays plan to build up right-hander Chris Devenski and left-hander Tyler Alexander to pitch three innings by mid-March. Depending on how they handle that assignment, the coaching staff will determine whether Devenski and Alexander will continue to stretch out as starters or stay put in a multi-inning relief capacity. Neither pitcher is likely to have much fantasy appeal with the Rays in 2024, but they'll give the Rays valuable flexibility either way. The 33-year-old Devenski finished last year with Tampa but had 29 relief appearances for the Los Angeles Angels before that, ultimately finishing with a 4.46 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 11 walks and 42 strikeouts in 42 1/3 relief innings. Devenski hasn't started a game in the big leagues since 2019, and at best, will be a low-upside AL-only streamer if he makes any starts for the Rays in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Adam Berry
2 weeks agoIf Houston Astros right-handers Justin Verlander (shoulder) and J.P. France (shoulder) aren't ready for the start of the 2024 regular season, it's possible that right-handers Ronel Blanco and Brandon Bielak could be starting rotation options to begin the year. It's worth noting that Bielak is out of minor-league options. Blanco, 30, has appeared in 24 games (seven starts) for Houston the last two years and has gone 2-1 with a 4.78 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with 32 walks and 59 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings. Bielak, 27, probably the more likely option of the two, had 15 outings (13 starts) last year in Houston and had a 3.83 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with 36 walks and a career-high 62 K's in 80 innings. He filled in admirably for the team's injury-ravaged rotation in 2023 until struggling later in the year and being demoted to the minors.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Chandler Rome
2 weeks agoFree-agent infielder Mike Moustakas has signed a minor-league deal with the Chicago White Sox that includes an invite to big-league spring training. The 35-year-old split the 2023 season between the Rockies and Angels and hit .247 with 12 home runs and a .685 OPS across 112 games played. The veteran was a mainstay for the Royals from 2011-2017 but his production has dropped off since signing a deal with the Cincinnati Reds prior to the 2020 season. Primarily a third baseman, the veteran has spent time in the big leagues with the Royals, Brewers, Reds, Rockies, and Angels. He is the lifetime owner of a .247 average with 215 home runs alongside a .738 OPS across 1,427 games. With Andrew Vaughn, Yoan Moncada, and Eloy Jimenez set to log the bulk of reps at the corner infield spot and designated hitter, Moustakas appears hard-pressed to get many reps with the White Sox, barring injury.--Brenton Kemp - RotoBallerSource: Jon Heyman
2 weeks agoThe San Francisco Giants have signed relief pitcher Austin Warren to a one-year deal, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Warren flashed dominance as a rookie with the Angels in 2021 but has struggled since then, posting 5.60 K/9, 2.55 BB/9, and 2.04 HR/9 over two seasons. He will likely fill a depth role in San Francisco, keeping him off the fantasy radar in all formats.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBallerSource: Susan Slusser
2 weeks agoThe New York Yankees have re-signed right-handed reliever Lou Trivino to a one-year deal with a club option for the 2025 season. According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Yankees will pay Trivino $1.5 million this year, and his option is worth an additional $5 million. It should be noted that Trivino underwent Tommy John surgery last summer and isn't expected to be ready for Opening Day. Therefore, this deal allows the Yankees to have a familiar face return to their bullpen for the back half of the year while simultaneously rehabbing and evaluating him for 2025.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBallerSource: Jon Morosi
2 weeks agoThe New York Yankees have acquired left-handed pitcher Clayton Andrews from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor-league right-handed pitcher Joshua Quezada. Andrews is now on the Yankees' 40-man roster and will participate in Spring Training as he looks to carve out a bullpen role at the major league level. The 27-year-old disappointed in his first taste of big league action last year, surrendering 11 runs over 3.1 innings of work. With that said, he fared better in the minors, amassing a .193 opponent batting average and 11.68 K/9. Heading back to Milwaukee is Quezada, a 19-year-old native of Nicaragua whom the Yankees signed in 2023. He amassed a 3.69 ERA, 9.32 K/9, and 3.50 BB/9 in the Dominican Summer League last year.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBallerSource: New York Yankees
2 weeks agoThe Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder Peyton Burdick from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations. To make room for Burdick on the 40-man roster, Baltimore shifted right-handed reliever FĂ©lix Bautista (elbow) to the 60-day injured list. Burdick had been designated for assignment by the Marlins last week, and the Orioles represent just his second organization since being drafted in 2019. The 26-year-old has struggled at all levels of pro ball, posting high strikeout rates, low OPS totals, and poor defensive metrics. Even if he manages to make the Orioles' Opening Day roster, Burdick isn't expected to make an impact at the big-league level anytime soon.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBallerSource: Jake Rill
2 weeks agoThe New York Yankees placed outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez (elbow) on the 60-day injured list on Wednesday to make room on the 40-man roster for right-hander Lou Trivino, who was signed to an undisclosed one-year major-league deal. Trivino's deal includes a club option for 2025. Dominguez is recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right throwing arm but has been shagging balls in the outfield in camp and is scheduled to resume playing catch soon. However, the 21-year-old still has a long ways to go in his recovery and isn't expected to make his 2024 debut until sometime this summer. He took Justin Verlander deep on his first big-league swing last year and had four home runs in his first eight games, demonstrating the kind of upside he'll have as a starter for the Yankees in the future.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Yankees
2 weeks agoSan Francisco Giants left-hander Robbie Ray (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list on Wednesday as he recovers from left-elbow UCL surgery. In a corresponding move, the Giants signed right-hander Austin Warren to an undisclosed one-year major-league deal. Ray underwent Tommy John surgery in May of last year after making only three starts for the Seattle Mariners and won't be able to pitch in 2024 until the second half of the season after the Giants acquired the former Cy Young winner in an offseason trade with Seattle. The 32-year-old veteran southpaw is an elite strikeout artist when healthy and took the next step in 2021 with the Blue Jays when he won the American League Cy Young by finally limiting his walks. Ray has already been cleared to throw three times a week but won't be an option for fantasy managers until the second half in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Maria I. Guardado
2 weeks agoWashington Nationals outfielder Stone Garrett (leg) is a full-go for the start of spring training and will hopefully be ready for Opening Day, but general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez said that Garrett's progress will be monitored closely at camp. It was reported recently that Garrett was unlikely to be ready for Opening Day after having surgery last August to fix a fractured fibula. It appears the 28-year-old is making good progress, but he'll understandably be eased into Grapefruit League action, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he starts the 2024 season on the 10-day injured list. Whenever Garrett does make his season debut, he's likely to be involved in a platoon situation in Washington's outfield, possibly with the left-handed-hitting Jesse Winker.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Mark Zuckerman
