NFL Tables Fourth-And-15 Onside Kick Alternative
5 years agoNFL owners tabled the proposal for a fourth-and-15 alternative to the onside kick during Thursday's virtual meeting. It would have given teams an alternative to the onside kick in an effort to retain possession after a score. If the play failed from the team's own 25-yard-line, the opponent would have taken possession. This could be revisited down the road. Among other changes, though, a bylaw change will increase the number of players who can return from Injured Reserve from two to three per team. Teams will also be prevented from manipulating the game clock by committing multiple dead-ball fouls while the clock is running. Teams used this loophole last year to drain the clock while in punt formation with more than five minutes remaining in the game.
