Matt Wallner Starting Rehab Assignment on Wednesday
Matt Wallner (hamstring) is starting his minor-league rehab assignment on Wednesday night and will serve as the designated hitter for the Triple-A St. Paul Saints, according to The Athletic's Dan Hayes. Wallner could be approaching his return to the big leagues after landing on the 10-day injured list on April 17 with a Grade 3 left-hamstring strain. However, given his long layoff, the 27-year-old outfielder will likely need a lengthy rehab assignment, so there's no guarantee he'll be back with the Twins before the end of May. The former 39th overall pick in 2019 out of Southern Mississippi had gone 15-for-57 (.263) with a home run, three RBI and seven runs scored in 18 games in April before suffering his hamstring injury. When fully healthy and back on the active MLB roster, Wallner should see regular playing time at outfield and DH against righties.
