Boston Red Sox rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer (wrist) started baseball activities on Monday and is playing catch, according to Christopher Smith of MassLive. Mayer has been slow to recover from a right-wrist sprain that has kept him out since July 24, but the 22-year-old appears to be turning a corner. Still, it could be another week or two before he can rejoin the major-league roster, as the Red Sox will likely send him on a short minor-league rehab assignment first. The former fourth overall pick in 2021 made his big-league debut in 2025 and has hit .228/.272/.402 with four home runs, 10 RBI and 20 runs scored in 44 games. Mayer was previously one of Boston's top prospects and is an intresting stash in dynasty/keeper fantasy leagues, but there's no guarantee he'll see regular playing time in the final month of the season when he returns.--Keith Hernandez
