Lewis Brinson Has The Opportunity To Start In Miami
7 years agoMiami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson did not do much with his first taste of MLB pitching (.106/.236/.277 with two homers and a steal over 55 PAs), but the 24-year old crushed Triple-A pitching (.331/.400/.562 with 13 HR and 11 SB (five CS) in 340 PAs) last season. Milwaukee's Triple-A affiliate is the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, so altitude helped Brinson compile that slash line. Still, numbers like those suggest a power-speed combo that fantasy owners are always searching for. The Marlins acquired Brinson this offseason in a package that sent Christian Yelich to Milwaukee, so Brinson will likely be the Opening Day center fielder for the Marlins. While he had struggles in the big leagues last season, Brinson had a 1.004 OPS from High-A to Triple-A for the Rangers in 2015, capped by a .983 OPS in the Arizona Fall League. One issue for Brinson is that he hit a lot of ground balls in his short stint with the Brewers (56.7%), but his hard hit ball rate was 33.3%. He had a fly ball rate that stayed in the high-30s throughout the minors, so you can expect for him to straighten out his issues with too many ground balls. While he will have some issues in the beginning of his career, look for Brinson to turn it on as the season continues. He might not be a smart addition in redraft leagues to open the season, but he is a prudent pick in dynasty formats to open 2018.
