Kerryon Johnson 2019 Outlook: The Man in Motown
6 years agoAfter starting the 2018 season strong, Kerryon Johnson’s season came to a screeching halt due to an injury after playing 10 games as a rookie. During this time, he was splitting touches with the aging, but coach favorite, LeGarrette Blount in the backfield, making it harder to show his total skill set. Coming back healthy in 2019 will be important. Blount is out of the picture and despite bringing in C.J. Anderson, the starting job should be Johnson's.
Johnson averaged 5.4 yards per carry behind an offensive line which struggled all season in protection. The offense as a whole had its woes, which affected the run game. However, positive moves have been made in the previous offseason, which should return dividend for the run game.
Before his injury, Johnson was on pace to have over 1,000 rush yards and over 60 receptions out of the backfield. Both of these numbers should be achieved this season as he demonstrates why he was the SEC offensive player of the year his final season at Auburn in 2017. Being taken in the early fourth round of drafts, Johnson is a perfect candidate to start off a running back group if you are going wide receiver heavy early, or using an early pick on Patrick Mahomes. He would also be a great RB2 if you are using a more balanced draft strategy. Either way, Kerryon Johnson is a true three-down back and on a Detroit, a team looking to run the ball he should finish as no worse than an RB2. However, he also has the potential to finish in the low-end RB1 range with the likes of Nick Chubb or Le’Veon Bell. Those are players he is going a full two rounds later than.
