Jonah Tong's MLB Debut on Friday Could be a Spot Start
Jonah Tong, the No. 52 overall prospect in baseball, will make his major-league debut on Friday in a start against the division-rival Miami Marlins, league sources told The Athletic's Will Sammon and Tim Britton. Tong didn't allow a run and struck out 17 in 11 2/3 innings in his two starts at Triple-A Syracuse, and he holds a 1.43 ERA with 179 K's and 47 walks in 113 2/3 inning on the year in the minors. The Mets are carving out a sixth spot in the starting rotation for Tong this week, which allows them to give both Kodai Senga and David Peterson some extra rest. It means that Tong's MLB audition on Friday could just be a spot start, although the matchup is good enough to make fantasy managers in all formats seriously consider streaming him. The 22-year-old's strikeout upside is evident after leading the minors in that category.
