Dominik Kubalik Records Five Points in Blackhawks' Win
4 years agoThe Chicago Blackhawks shocked the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday afternoon with four first-period goals to take the first game of the Stanley Cup Qualifying Series. Edmonton made a late push with two third-period goals but ultimately fell 6-4. Rookie Dominik Kubalik — who scored 30 goals in 68 regular-season games — was the offensive star of the game. He scored two power-play goals and recorded five total points. Jonathan Toews had two goals and an assist. Duncan Keith had two assists from the blue line. Goaltender Corey Crawford wasn’t overly sharp and allowed four goals on 29 shots. For the Oilers, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each recorded a goal and two assists. Edmonton’s questionable decision to start goaltender Mike Smith — who has extensive playoff experience but is coming off a worse regular season than Mikko Koskinen — melted down and allowed five goals on 23 shots. Koskinen held the fort after taking over and allowed just one goal on 19 shots.
