Cubs Extensively Shopping Willson Contreras
4 years agoThe Chicago Cubs are now extensively shopping catcher Willson Contreras after trading starting pitcher Yu Darvish and non-tendering outfielder Kyle Schwarber. Contreras is projected to earn at least $5 million and maybe as much as $7.4 million in salary arbitration in 2020, so he could be a low-cost solution for a team in need of catching but unwilling to meet J.T. Realmuto's high price as a free agent. The 28-year-old has a 113 career OPS+ with a great arm behind the plate. The 28-year-old was an All-Star in both 2018 and 2019, but he was disappointing with a .243/.356/.407 slash line, seven home runs and 26 RBI in 57 games during the shortened 2020 season. But there is plenty of bounce-back potential. He'll be cheaper than Realmuto and James McCann in fantasy drafts and still has potential to finish as a top-three fantasy backstop over a full season.
