Cubs Could Hang On To Kris Bryant
4 years agoChicago Cubs president Jed Hoyer said he "absolutely" sees a path in which third baseman Kris Bryant could remain with the team in 2021. Bryant has been available in a trade for more than a year with the Cubs looking to bring down their payroll, but Hoyer said there's no trade imminent for the former MVP. "I don't think it should be treated as a fait accompli that [a trade is] going to happen," Hoyer said. The 28-year-old and three-time All-Star is expected to make close to $20 million in his final season before free agency. With little clarity regarding payroll budgets during the COVID-19 pandemic, teams are taking a more calculated and safe approach. Bryant was injured and hit just .206 with four home runs and a .644 OPS in 2020, but a bounce-back next year could give his trade market a boost next summer if they hang onto him this winter.
