Anthony Volpe Hitting Leadoff Again Versus Twins
2 years agoNew York Yankees rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe is back in the leadoff spot on Friday against the Minnesota Twins and right-hander Louie Varland. DJ LeMahieu (quadriceps) is the team's usual leadoff hitter, but he'll miss his third straight game on Friday. Volpe has been in the leadoff spot for the Yanks in two of the three games that LeMahieu has missed, although the veteran infielder is expected to return to action on Saturday. Volpe tore it up in spring training to win the starting job at the 6 to start the year, but he's since gone 6-for-38 (.158) with a double, triple, no home runs, no RBI, five walks and 14 strikeouts in his first 13 MLB games. The 21-year-old could continue to struggle offensively, and he'll move back down to the bottom of the team's batting order once LeMahieu is back.
