Angels Hopeful Shohei Ohtani, Griffin Canning Will Be Ready
4 years agoLos Angeles Angels manager Joe Maddon said he's "very" hopeful that starting pitchers Shohei Ohtani (elbow), Griffin Canning (elbow) and Felix Pena (knee) will be ready for Opening Day in late July. None of the three were likely to be able to pitch on the original Opening Day, but the coronavirus pandemic has bought them extra time to heal. Ohtani was expected to be ready to hit right away, but the Angels weren't expecting him to be a rotation option until sometime in May. The Japanese two-way star has more upside with his right arm, but he also provides a nice power/speed combination with the bat. Tommy John surgery is still a possibility for Canning, so he's merely a late-round flier in deeper leagues. Pena is also an injury risk and has limited fantasy upside as a potential swingman.
