Adam Wainwright 2022 Player Outlook: Veteran Should Add Stability In Fantasy Rotations
3 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright has shown no signs of slowing down, and the veteran right-hander continues to put hitters away. He posted a 22-10 record, 3.08 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 3.66 FIP, and 228 strikeouts over 272 innings over the last two seasons. The 40-year-old relied on his sinker and kept his walks down, evidenced by last season's 6 BB%, which was 83rd in percentile rankings. St. Louis believes he can repeat his 2020 and 2021 numbers and rewarded him with a one-year, $17 million extension this offseason. He doesn't have elite velocity but reduced his HR:9 from 1.23 in 2020 to 0.92 in 2021. His opponent's BAIP dropped from .319 in 2019 to .256 last season. Cutter projects Wainwright to post a 3.71 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 19 quality starts, and 158 strikeouts over 191 innings. According to Rotoballer's Expected Draft Values, the veteran is roughly fair value at his ADP of 169. Wainwright should add stability; with a great defense behind him, fantasy managers should expect double-digit wins and solid ratios from the Cardinals ace in 2022.
