Is Justice Hill or Gus Edwards the Ravens RB2 behind JK Dobbins? Fantasy Football Outlook

Gus Edwards - Fantasy Football Rankings, NFL Injury News, Draft Sleepers

Is Justice Hill or Gus Edwards the primary backup to JK Dobbins for the Baltimore Ravens? Which running back should be stashed as Dobbins' handcuff? Read the 2023 fantasy football outlook.

Baltimore Ravens running back JK Dobbins has battled knee injuries over the last two years, meaning it's worth examining who the top handcuff RB is in the high-powered offense led by Lamar Jackson.

The team didn't add much to the position this offseason, so Justice Hill and Gus Edwards figure to be the top backups to Dobbins once again. Determining which player is the primary backup will be important heading into 2023 fantasy drafts.

Is Hill or Edwards the top backup to Dobbins in 2o23? Let's dive in.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

The Case for Justice Hill

Hill got a ton of work during various offseason practices with J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards only taking part in individual drills, and the 2019 fourth-rounder has reportedly (Jeff Zrebiec -- The Athletic) become a favorite of the coaching staff because of his work ethic, selflessness, and versatility.

The 25-year-old averaged 5.3 yards per carry in limited chances for the Ravens in 2022 in his first season back from an Achilles injury. He has 4.4 speed and adds an element of explosiveness to the offense Edwards does not.

The Case for Gus Edwards

Edwards missed the entire 2021 season with a torn ACL and played in just nine contests in 2022 due to knee complications, hamstring issues, and a concussion. However, he has averaged no fewer than 5.0 yards per carry in his four seasons in the NFL and should continue to see somewhat of a role in the Baltimore backfield if he can stay on the field.

He was the main man behind Dobbins last season and in 2020 when both players were healthy and active.

Which Ravens' Running Back Should I Draft?

For now, Edwards should be viewed as Dobbins' primary backup and should be drafted as a handcuff RB in 2023 fantasy drafts. Hill could see touches if Dobbins or Edwards struggle with injuries once again, but he's likely primarily going to be a special teamer until then.

The Ravens' offense is expected to be much more pass-happy under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken, so Edwards might not have as much standalone value as in previous seasons. However, Baltimore has its best group of overall weapons since Lamar Jackson has been there, so his touchdown upside could be huge if he starts a few games.

Edwards is being drafted outside the top 60 running backs, so fantasy managers can get him in the last round of drafts. It's worth noting he's more attractive in standard leagues due to his lack of pass-catching upside.
