Is Joe Mixon Out for the 2025 Season?
While the team has not officially ruled their starting running back for the remainder of the season, it has continued to trend in this direction. Earlier this month, Houston's general manager, Nick Caserio, reported that his status for the remainder of the campaign is "in limbo" and they should have more clarity in the coming weeks.
However, since this update, the team has yet to share any inspiring news regarding his status.
While a return could still be in the cards, the managers currently stashing Mixon should begin looking for an alternative, as the veteran running back does not appear to be in the team's plans for the 2025 campaign.

Joe Mixon 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
Given the lack of clarity on his status, managers should only consider stashing Mixon in 14+ team leagues that have numerous IR spots. Managers in shallow formats should consider dropping Mixon ahead of Week 9, as he appears to be facing an uphill battle to return to action this season.
While Mixon has been sidelined, the Texans have leaned on veteran running back Nick Chubb and rookie Woody Marks to lead the backfield. During their victory over the 49ers on Sunday, Marks and Chubb combined for 28 rushing attempts and tallied 118 yards on the ground.
Even if Mixon were to return to action, he would likely not have a workhorse role as both Chubb and Marks have produced at a high level this season. In 2024, Mixon was the lone productive option in the Houston backfield, which allowed him to take 245 rushing attempts and catch 36 passes.
Instead of stashing Mixon, managers should look to stash high-end handcuff running backs like Jaydon Blue, Isaiah Davis, Blake Corum, or Ray Davis, who could have immense upside if they were to be pushed into the starting role on their respective teams. Davis is coming off a season-high 65-yard rushing game and is slowly carving out a prominent role in the New York backfield.
