Padres To Work On Extension For Fernando Tatis Jr.
Fernando Tatis Jr. on a long-term contract extension this offseason. The idea would be to buy out Tatis' arbitration years, which would mean a deal of at least six years and likely longer. The superstar shortstop won't turn 21 until Jan. 2, but he finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Peter Alonso and Mike Soroka for 2019. Tatis played in just 84 games in his rookie season because of a stress reaction in his back that knocked him out in August. He also had a hamstring strain in April but hit .317 with a .379 on-base percentage, .590 slugging percentage and 4.2 WAR. Tatis was one of four rookies to hit 22 home runs and steal 16 bases, so he'll obviously be highly coveted in fantasy drafts in 2020.
