The Seattle Mariners are releasing outfielder Ichiro Suzuki on Thursday so that he can transition into the role of special assistant to the chairman, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto. In a corresponding move, reliever Erik Goeddel has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. The Japanese icon was hitting just .205 with no homers, RBI or steals in 44 at-bats in his return to Seattle this year, and it had become clear that the legendary outfielder was past his prime.
