Week 8 Running Back Rankings Outlooks
Bucky Irving, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving (foot, shoulder) is progressing in his recovery from both of his injuries, but he may not be quite ready to return just yet, according to head coach Todd Bowles. The Bucs are on a short week before visiting the Saints in New Orleans, before heading into their bye week. The team will likely be cautious with Irving, who was posting huge numbers before his injury. He had at least 99 rushing and receiving yards in three straight games, but he hasn't been able to play since Week 4.
If Irving misses a fourth straight game, Rachaad White and Sean Tucker would remain the backfield rotation for Tampa, with White taking most of the work as a strong RB2 with RB1 upside in New Orleans. Tucker can be a flex play if you're desperate due to bye weeks, but White should continue to dominate the workload until Irving is ready to return.
Woody Marks, Houston Texans
Houston Texans running back Woody Marks led the backfield in carries on Monday Night Football, and even though he wasn't very efficient, he saved his fantasy day with a late touchdown as a receiver. Marks played 61% of snaps and had 10 of the team's 15 running back carries against the Seahawks. He only had 15 rushing yards on those 10 carries, though, while quarterback C.J. Stroud led the team with 25 rushing yards on his two carries. Marks found the end zone on one of his three catches on five targets for 20 receiving yards.
While his rushing total is disappointing, his workload is a positive sign moving forward that the fourth-round pick from USC maintains his role in a timeshare. Nick Chubb will still get early down work, but Marks seems to be the go-to option on passing downs and brings nice RB2 upside as a result. The Texans are home next week against the 49ers.
Cam Akers, Minnesota Vikings
As the Minnesota Vikings face a short week and a series of injuries in the backfield, running back Cam Akers is likely the next man up if needed on Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers. Jordan Mason should still be the Vikings' top option, but Zavier Scott (wrist) is now facing an injury, and Aaron Jones (hamstring) has not yet been activated off injured reserve. If Jones is not moved onto the active roster, Akers likely would be Minnesota's answer behind Mason. No action is needed just yet, but managers in deeper leagues might want to keep an eye on the Vikings' backfield if facing a bye-week crunch.
Hassan Haskins, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers running back Hassan Haskins (hamstring) is listed as a non-participant on his team's Monday injury report due to a hamstring injury. The Chargers did not actually practice on Monday, so this is an estimation of Haskins' status ahead of the team's Week 8 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night. In two games since Chargers RB1 Omarion Hampton (ankle) was placed on Injured Reserve, Haskins has split backfield work in Los Angeles with Kimani Vidal.
Vidal has been the clear lead back, as Haskins has recorded 28 yards from scrimmage on 10 total touches over the last two weeks. If Haskins is unable to play on Thursday, Vidal would likely dominate backfield work for the Chargers even further. Veteran back Nyheim Hines could also play a role on passing downs.
TreVeyon Henderson, New England Patriots
New England Patriots rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson had only two carries (on nine offensive snaps) for five yards in the 31-13 blowout win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 7 on Sunday, while backfield mate Rhamondre Stevenson saw a season-high 18 carries and scored a touchdown. "It's just kinda how it played out. Thought Rhamondre was running well. Had some good protections. TreVeyon's gonna be a large part of what we do ... that's just kind of where it was this week," head coach Mike Vrabel said when asked about Henderson's sparse usage.
It was especially concerning that Henderson barely played with the Patriots, having a comfortable lead in the second half. Stevenson has had his share of fumbling issues, but he hasn't put the ball on the ground in the last two weeks and was very efficient on Sunday. The 22-year-old Henderson should get more involved in the offense eventually, but right now, it's hard to trust him as even an RB3/flex in fantasy lineups.
Rico Dowdle, Chuba Hubbard, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales told reporters on Monday that he anticipates a continued workload split between his two running backs, Chuba Hubbard and Rico Dowdle. In the two games that Hubbard missed with an injured calf, Dowdle saw a total of 61 opportunities, which he converted into an unreal 470 yards and two scores. In Hubbard's first game back, the two saw a nearly 50/50 workload split, with Hubbard on the field for five more snaps than Dowdle, but Dowdle seeing 18 opportunities to Hubbard's 16.
Dowdle was also the more efficient back on the day, averaging 5.3 yards per touch to Hubbard's 3.4, and managing a usable fantasy performance with his 96 yards. For fantasy managers who had feasted on his last two games, it was surely a disappointment, but in the right matchup, both backs should provide enough of a floor to help navigate bye weeks and injuries from the flex spot, especially as Hubbard continues to knock off the rust.
