Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 3:
Russell Wilson, RB, New York Giants
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson enters Week 3 with a strong outlook as he prepares to face the Kansas City Chiefs at home. After a slow start in Week 1, Wilson's explosive 450-yard, three-touchdown game against Dallas has vaulted him to the QB7 overall, averaging an impressive 23.8 fantasy points per game.
The Chiefs' defense presents a beatable matchup. At the same time, they limit yardage, they have already surrendered three passing touchdowns, and have a below-average red zone defense that allows scores on 66.7% of opponent trips.
Kansas City's vulnerability is confirmed by their fantasy ranking, where they sit 25th against the position by allowing 19.73 points per game against QBs, cementing Wilson as a possible fantasy start for the upcoming week.
Carson Wentz, QB, Minnesota Vikings
Despite a chance to start for at least the next couple of weeks, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz should remain off the fantasy radar in Week 3 against Cincinnati. The veteran is filling in for starter J.J. McCarthy and certainly has the experience to handle the offense.
However, the bigger concern is an offensive line that currently leads the NFL in sack percentage and could be in dire straits come Sunday. If starter Christian Darrisaw (knee) is not ready to return from his ACL rehab against the Bengals, the Vikings' projected left tackle, left guard, and center will go into the game with a combined two NFL starts.
Although Las Vegas has the projected game total at 47.5, some fantasy managers are still expecting this to be a low-scoring game. With that said, starting Wentz is an unnecessary risk, even in Superflex leagues.
Jared Goff, QB, Detroit Lions
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was outstanding on the field during Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears. Goff bounced back in epic fashion after a lackluster performance in the season opener. Goff completed 23-of-28 passing attempts for 334 yards with five touchdowns in the blowout victory.
Yes, you read that correctly, Goff threw five touchdowns in this game. Goff went out and showed former Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson that he's doing just fine without him. He tossed a pair of touchdowns to Jameson Williams while Amon-Ra St. Brown found the end zone three times on Sunday.
Now, Goff will head into a tough test against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3. Given his performance this week, fantasy managers should view Goff as a QB1 for next week.
Dak Prescott, QB, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott lit up the Giants for 361 yards in Week 2, rewarding fantasy managers who rolled him out with confidence. If that was an easy call, this week's matchup against the Bears should have you practically drooling.
Chicago's pass defense has been downright charitable, giving up 234 yards and 3.5 passing touchdowns per game. Some of that is injury-related, but let's be real--the Dennis Allen scheme has offered about as much resistance as a screen door in a hurricane. Last week's mollywhopping came courtesy of a determined Lions squad, and now a top-five Dallas offense averaging 30.5 points per game comes to town ready to keep the scoreboard humming.
Even with rain in the forecast, Prescott is a set-and-forget QB1. Just give the wind report a glance on Sunday morning, then sit back and enjoy the fireworks.
Mac Jones, QB, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones is lined up for another start in place of Brock Purdy (toe/shoulder) in Week 3. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said it is "highly unlikely" Purdy gets the start on Sunday.
Jones finished as the QB7 in Week 2, completing 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns against the Saints. On Sunday, the 49ers face an Arizona Cardinals defense that gave up 328 yards and three touchdowns to Carolina's Bryce Young last week and might be without cornerbacks Max Melton (knee) and Will Johnson (groin).
The well-traveled veteran, Mac Jones, is projected as a fantasy football QB2 in Week 3, making him viable in superflex formats and deeper 12+ team leagues.
