Recent Fantasy Football Running Back News
Brian Robinson Jr., Washington Commanders
With trade talks surrounding Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. growing louder by the day, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport believes the fourth-year back has played his last down with Washington. Robinson was not with the team for their Monday night preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and it was Chris Rodriguez Jr. and preseason darling Jacory Croskey-Merritt who handled Robinson's usual early-down work. Rapoport believes the team may be willing to eat a portion of Robinson's remaining salary to facilitate a deal.
Should Robinson play elsewhere in 2025, Rodriguez and Croskey-Merritt will likely continue to split early down carries to start the year. Still, Croskey-Merritt's explosiveness makes him the obvious upside play and a good bet to seize the job outright. Forgotten in all of this, veteran Austin Ekeler should maintain his passing-down work, a role he quietly thrived in last year before a concussion cut his season short.
Jaydon Blue, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Jaydon Blue (ankle, heel) returned to practice on Tuesday, according to Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News. Blue has been out of action for nearly two full weeks with a bone bruise. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer recently said that the team is hopeful Blue will play in the team's final preseason game on Friday against the Atlanta Falcons.
A fifth-round pick out of Texas, Blue is part of a backfield committee in Dallas with veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. He's unlikely to dominate touches early on, but Blue could feasibly work his way into the RB1 role for the Cowboys throughout the season. As a result, Blue is worthy of a late-round pick in most fantasy formats.
Cam Skattebo, New York Giants
New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo (hamstring) will return to the practice field at training camp on Tuesday, according to Newsday's Evan Barnes. Skattebo will most likely be limited in practice after his hamstring injury forced him to miss the first two preseason games.
It remains to be seen if the 23-year-old fourth-rounder will be able to play in the preseason finale on Thursday against the New York Giants. While the Arizona State product should have a role in the Giants' offense in his first NFL season, the missed practice time this summer means he has plenty of work to do to prove to the coaching staff that he deserves to be involved alongside Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary. Skattebo isn't fast, but he excels with power and explosiveness. He should eventually become New York's RB2 and is worth a fantasy draft pick as an RB3/flex.
Chase Brown, Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati Bengals running back Chase Brown carried the ball five times for 16 yards and a touchdown in the 31-17 win against the Washington Commanders. Brown was able to find the endzone on a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line, which is a sign that the Bengals trust him in short-yardage situations.
Brown has now carried the ball 10 times for 40 yards and a touchdown, adding three receptions for 25 yards through the air in the first two preseason games. The 2023 fifth-round pick has league-winning upside as the starting running back for one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. Brown's last chance to get preseason reps will be Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts.
