Wilyer Abreu Going on Injured List With Side Injury
Wilyer Abreu (side) is going on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a side injury, according to manager Alex Cora. In a corresponding move, the Red Sox called up top outfielder prospect Roman Anthony from Triple-A Worcester. It explains why he's out of the starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays for only the second time this year against a right-handed pitcher. With Abreu on the shelf and Anthony starting in center field on Monday, Ceddanne Rafaela will make his first career start in right field. Th 25-year-old Abreu is already just two home runs shy of tying his career-high in homers that he set last year, but he had just two hits in 14 at-bats with eight strikeouts in seven games in June before getting hurt. When he returns, the logjam in Boston's crowded outfield could mean fewer playing time for Abreu. UPDATE: The Red Sox are saying Abreu has a strained left oblique.
