Xander Bogaerts Activated And Starting Against Braves

San Diego Padres second baseman Xander Bogaerts (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday and will start at second base and bat fifth behind Manny Machado in the series opener against the visiting Atlanta Braves and rookie right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach. It will be Bogaerts' first game back in the big leagues since he suffered a fractured left shoulder while diving for a ball on defense back in late May. The 31-year-old veteran's return to the keystone in SD just before next week's All-Star break will push Jake Cronenworth back to regular duties at first base and Luis Arraez back to a full-time role as the designated hitter. Bogaerts looked good on his minor-league rehab assignment but was hitting a miserable .219/.265/.316 with a .581 OPS, four homers, 14 RBI and four steals in 187 at-bats before fracturing his shoulder.
