Week 8 Fantasy Football Quarterback Outlooks

Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is coming off a career-best performance with 420 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. However, in last week's loss to the Indianapolis Colts, he faced pressure 35 times, highlighting the ongoing pressure he's been under behind a battered offensive line for most of the season. Herbert now faces a top-five Minnesota Vikings pass defense on a short week, which poses an immediate risk because the Vikings run the second-highest blitz rate in the NFL.

Still, volume matters: Herbert is the most-blitzed QB in the league and just threw 55 passes. Additionally, the Vikings recently allowed 326 yards and three touchdowns to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Key offensive linemen Joe Alt (ankle), Trey Pipkins (knee), and Jamaree Salyer (knee) all practiced in some capacity this week and are listed as questionable for Thursday's game.

If they play, protection could improve enough to let Herbert continue airing it out in a must-win situation. RotoBaller projects Herbert as QB11. He remains a locked-in QB1 due to his high passing volume and playmaking ability.

Carson Wentz, Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings will give Carson Wentz (shoulder) another start at the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday, during which fantasy managers should view him as a volatile superflex option. At this point in his career, managers should know what they're getting with the veteran quarterback. Wentz could lead a surgical game-winning drive like Week 5, throw a horrific pick-six (Week 7), be a low-volume game manager (Week 3), or chuck it for 300-plus yards (Weeks 4 and 7).

The suddenly struggling Chargers are middle of the pack against fantasy quarterbacks, presenting a decent matchup, though it should be mentioned that Wentz was openly grimacing last week due to the lingering injury to his non-throwing shoulder. He is still throwing to receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison against a defense that has had its fair share of issues, however, so there is a reasonable chance for a big fantasy game. Ultimately, managers will have to gauge their risk tolerance for a gunslinging backup on a short week.

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) will be limited in practice again on Wednesday, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said that "he's steadily getting better every week," according to Vic Tafur of The Athletic. Purdy suffered a turf-toe injury in the season opener, missed two games, and then aggravated it in Week 4. He has not played since and is questionable to return in the Week 8 game on the road in Houston against the Texans this Sunday.

While Purdy is making slow progress, he's going to need to upgrade to a full practice session to be cleared to return under center on Sunday. Backup Mac Jones has played a very respectable QB in Purdy's absence this year, which has afforded the Niners the luxury of slow-playing Purdy's recovery. Fantasy managers should consider Purdy to be on the wrong side of questionable this week, but Week 9 versus the New York Giants could be much more realistic if he continues to make progress.

Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield (knee) is dealing with a knee injury and was listed as a limited participant in the first practice of the week on Wednesday, according to Brianna Dix of Buccaneers.com. Mayfield is coming off one of his worst performances of the season in the Monday night loss to the Detroit Lions, in which he threw for 228 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while not carrying the ball at all.

In addition to his health, Mayfield's lack of healthy weapons in the passing game is now becoming a concern, as the team lost Mike Evans to a broken collarbone on Monday, and Chris Godwin (leg) will miss a third straight game this weekend. Mayfield should play through his knee injury this week. He should be considered a low-end QB1 in fantasy against the Saints.

Bryce Young, Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young (ankle) was held out of the first practice of the week on Wednesday due to the high-ankle sprain he suffered in the Week 7 win over the New York Jets on Sunday, according to Darin Gantt of Panthers.com. Head coach Dave Canales said that Young is considered "day-to-day" for this Sunday's contest against the Buffalo Bills. High-ankle sprains typically sideline players for at least several weeks, so fantasy managers should be planning on being without the 24-year-old this weekend.

The good news is that the young signal-caller wasn't seen wearing a walking boot on Wednesday. The team isn't ruling Young out yet for Week 8, but the expectation is that veteran QB Andy Dalton will make his first start of 2025 this Sunday against the visiting Bills. At best, Dalton will be in play as a low-end QB2 streamer in leagues that start two QBs if Young is officially ruled out.

Marcus Mariota, Washington Commanders

Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota will make his third start of the season on Monday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect much production in a difficult matchup.

Mariota has been serviceable in his limited action, completing 64.6% of his passes with a 3:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, while adding some mobility outside the pocket. However, he now faces a Chiefs defense that ranks among the league's best, allowing the fifth-fewest yards per game and just 17.7 points per contest, good for third in the NFL.

To make matters worse, Mariota could once again be operating without two of his top pass-catchers as Deebo Samuel (heel) and Terry McLaurin (quad) both remain questionable. With limited weapons and a brutal defensive matchup, Mariota lacks fantasy upside and should remain on the waiver wire in all formats outside of deep superflex leagues.
