Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 9:
Jaxson Dart, QB, New York Giants
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart remains a high-floor fantasy option for his sixth NFL start, primarily due to his aggressive rushing ability, evidenced by six rushing touchdowns in just five games and a 16.96 fantasy points per game average.
This week's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers defense is favorable, as they rank 31st in the NFL with only nine sacks, which should give Dart ample time to utilize his dual-threat skills. Despite losing key weapons, Dart can exploit the 49ers' passing defense, which has allowed 229.3 passing yards and 13 passing touchdowns on the season.
Given the opponent's low pass-rush pressure and Dart's rushing floor, he is a solid QB2 start, capable of exceeding the 16.51 fantasy points per game the 49ers allow to quarterbacks.
Kyler Murray, QB, Arizona Cardinals
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (foot) was listed as a limited participant in Friday's practice, per Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. Murray was limited in practice for the second straight day as he recovers from a foot injury that has already sidelined him for two games, but head coach Jonathan Gannon said Thursday that the team is planning for him to start Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys.
There have also been reports of Murray and backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett splitting reps with Arizona's primary pass catchers, so it is still uncertain as to who the Cardinals' signal caller will be in Dallas on Monday Night Football.
Murray is familiar with playing at AT&T Stadium and would be set up with a pristine matchup if he were to make his return in Week 9, as the Cowboys have allowed the most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks.
Sam Darnold, QB, Seattle Seahawks
Hopefully, you rostered Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold (chest) through his bye week because he draws a great matchup with the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The Commanders' defense has had trouble stopping opposing passing offenses with a leaky secondary. Darnold should have no issues spreading the ball around to his various wide receivers all day.
Prior to a tough matchup with the Texans in Week 7, Darnold had notched five straight games with at least 16.08 fantasy points. While those are no world-beating numbers, they are enough to anchor your fantasy team at the quarterback position. Darnold's superpower this year has been his lack of turnovers. The Commanders have had difficulty forcing turnovers all season long. They only have four interceptions in eight games.
Darnold should be rostered for the rest of the season as a QB2 with upside. However, he should absolutely be in lineups in a week in which the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles, and their respective quarterbacks, are on a bye. Darnold was dealing with a chest injury all week, but he logged three full practice days. The injury should be of no concern.
Joe Flacco, QB, Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor is calling veteran quarterback Joe Flacco (shoulder) questionable to play in Week 9 against the visiting Chicago Bears on Sunday, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.
Taylor also said that Flacco looked good while being limited in Thursday's practice, a day after he was a non-participant due to an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder that he suffered in the Week 8 loss to the New York Jets. The 40-year-old said he was feeling good on Friday, but it's still unclear if he'll be given the green light to play this weekend.
The good news is that fantasy managers will know whether Flacco is active before the first games kick off on Sunday. If he's active, he'll be a midrange QB2 option for fantasy managers as he continues to relentlessly target star wideout Ja'Marr Chase. If Flacco is inactive, it will be Jake Browning back in the starting role, which would be bad news for Chase. UPDATE: Flacco did not practice on Friday.
Caleb Williams, QB, Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams could be poised for a strong game in Week 9 against a Cincinnati Bengals defense that has allowed the second-most passing yards in the league, only behind the Dallas Cowboys.
Williams wasn't bad in Chicago's Week 8 loss at Baltimore, completing 25 of his 38 pass attempts for 285 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. However, since his four-touchdown outburst against the Cowboys in Week 3, he's completed 60.8% of his passes while averaging 230 passing yards to go with three total touchdowns and two interceptions.
The 23-year-old has still been solid for fantasy purposes, ranking as QB15 in points per game, and gets a pristine matchup in Cincinnati on Sunday. Williams is ranked as RotoBaller's QB9 for Week 9.
