Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 2:
Justin Fields, QB, New York Jets
After impressing in his New York Jets debut last Sunday, quarterback Justin Fields appears to have a favorable matchup in Week 2. The mobile Fields will face the Buffalo Bills, who were unable to contain the Baltimore Ravens' rushing attack on Sunday. While the Bills pulled off a stunning 41-40 win, quarterback Lamar Jackson rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
He also completed 14 of 19 passes for 209 yards and two scores. To be sure, Fields isn't on the level of Jackson, a two-time MVP and a potential Hall of Famer. However, although Fields hasn't excelled as a passer in four full seasons in the NFL, he has been a major threat on the ground (5.9 yards per carry, 21 TDs on 430 attempts). He flashed his dual-threat abilities in a Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, carrying 12 times for 48 yards and a pair of TDs and completing 16 of 22 passes for 218 and another score.
The Steelers have a better defense than the Bills on paper, which could bode well for Fields in Week 2. The 26-year-old is still available in 13% of Yahoo leagues and may be worth a look as a key component of a run-heavy offense.
Aaron Rodgers, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers turned back the clock in Week 1, completing 22 of 30 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns in the Steelers' 34-32 win over the New York Jets. The 42-year-old quarterback completed passes to seven different receivers in Week 1 and looked fantastic in offensive coordinator Arthur Smith's scheme.
Rodgers faces the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, which should be an electric atmosphere in Acrisure Stadium. The Seahawks allowed the 13th fewest fantasy points in 2024 and forced two interceptions off 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
While the early excitement surrounding Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense is evident, Rodgers should be on fantasy benches this week.
Jard Goff, QB, Detroit Lions
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff put up the best numbers of his career in 2024, posting career highs in yards per pass attempt (8.6), passing touchdowns (37), and quarterback rating (111.8). Goff profiles as a fringe QB1 in fantasy this season, but there may be reason to believe that his road matchup in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers won't be his best game.
In the four games he's played at Lambeau Field with the Lions, Goff has averaged just 206.5 passing yards and one touchdown per contest. Additionally, the Packers just acquired All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons (back) from the Dallas Cowboys, trading away run-stuffing defensive tackle Kenny Clark in the process.
Parsons is battling a back injury but is expected to play, so the Lions could be motivated to try and pound the ball between the tackles rather than having Goff drop back and face the Green Bay pass rush. Goff is worth starting as a QB2 in Superflex leagues, but managers in single-QB formats may want to look elsewhere.
Daniel Jones, QB, Indianapolis Colts
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones put together an unbelievable season debut on Sunday. He completed 22-of-29 passing attempts for 272 yards with one touchdown. Jones didn't stop there as he rushed seven times for 26 yards with an additional two scores.
It's unlikely that anyone had Jones scoring three touchdowns on their opening week bingo card. It will get more challenging for Jones in Week 2 against a tough Denver Broncos defense. After that, Jones will play the Titans, Rams, and Raiders.
Fantasy managers shouldn't expect another three-touchdown game for Jones in Week 2. However, he could be an interesting long-term option given the Colts do play some lackluster defenses early in the season.
Michael Penix Jr., QB, Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is shaping up as an early breakout candidate. Despite missing wide receiver Darnell Mooney (shoulder) in Week 1, the rookie delivered an impressive performance, completing 27 of 42 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown, while adding 21 rushing yards and another score on the ground.
Penix's passing production was solid, but it was his mobility that should really excite fantasy managers. His ability to extend plays and contribute as a runner adds a valuable floor to his weekly outlook. In Week 2, Penix gets a primetime stage on Sunday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings, which is a rematch of the 2023 National Championship with J.J. McCarthy.
The Vikings just allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks in Week 1 and entered the game shorthanded on defense. With both Drake London (shoulder) and Mooney practicing ahead of the matchup, Penix should have his full complement of weapons and projects as a potential starter in most fantasy formats.
