When is Zebby Matthews getting called up? Will Matthews get promoted in May 2025? Read about this top fantasy baseball prospect outlook heading into Week 6.
After pitching in nine games for the Minnesota Twins last season, starting pitcher Zebby Matthews is not technically a prospect anymore. He threw 37 2/3 innings pitched for the Twins in 2024 and spent 47 days on the major league roster. Before he graduated as a prospect, Matthews was Minnesota's No. 20 prospect.
It wasn't a total shock when the right-hander didn't make the Twins' Opening Day roster. There were plenty of things Matthews still needed to work on in the minors. However, his time in the big leagues should be coming again following a strong start at Triple-A to begin the year.
So, when are the Twins going to call up Matthews? Can we expect him to be promoted in May? Let's dive in and find out.
Zebby Matthews Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball
Since making his minor league debut in 2022, Matthews continues to pitch well down in Minnesota's farm system. He has a career 3.09 ERA and 266 strikeouts in 48 games (43 starts). His best season in the minors came last year when he spent time at High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A.
In his 18 games (17 starts) across those three levels in 2024, Matthews finished with a 2.60 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, and 114 strikeouts in 97 innings pitched. Those strong numbers earned the right-hander a promotion to the major league roster on August 13, 2024. He made his first career start on that day against the Kansas City Royals and allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts across five solid innings.

Although Matthews showed some encouraging things in his first stint in the majors, he also had some rough outings. The 24-year-old gave up nine runs against the Toronto Blue Jays on August 31 and six runs against the Baltimore Orioles on September 28. All in all, he allowed 28 earned runs across 37 2/3 innings (6.69 ERA) with 43 strikeouts for the Twins last season.
Zebby Matthews Outlook for Fantasy Baseball
Matthews didn't necessarily have a strong first stint in the majors. He didn't pitch into the sixth inning once, and his 24.3 percent whiff rate didn't rank particularly great. However, Matthews is a solid stash candidate in some 12-plus team leagues in Week 6 of the fantasy baseball season.
He has looked solid across his six starts at Triple-A St. Paul this season and currently owns a 2.30 ERA and 34 strikeouts across 27 1/3 innings pitched. Even though Matthews has issued six walks over his past two games, it is encouraging that he has yet to allow more than two runs in a game this season. Therefore, we should expect the right-hander to be promoted at some point in 2025.

The only problem is that we don't know when the Twins will call him up. Matthews could eventually replace Chris Paddack (5.57) in the rotation, or Minnesota could decide to roll with a six-man rotation. Either way, the right-hander is worth stashing in some leagues. His fastball has reached 99 mph this year, which should help him in his second stint in the majors.
