ANALYSIS: After an injury forced New Orleans' starting running back Jamaal Williams from the team's Week 2 Monday night tussle with the Carolina Panthers, the Saints relied on little-known Tony Jones Jr. for the remainder of the game. The career backup answered the call admirably, logging 34 yards on 12 carries and finding the end zone twice.
The Saints have been decimated in the backfield at the outset of 2023 with Alvin Kamara serving a three-game suspension, rookie draft pick Kendre Miller battling various injuries, and offseason free-agent signee Williams now looking at a multiple-week absence with a hamstring issue.
With all the issues in the New Orleans backfield, it's easy to understand why fantasy managers might have some interest in Jones. However, the 25-year-old might prove to be fool's gold, as the Saints appear to have running back reinforcements on the way. Kamara is set to return from suspension in Week 4, while Miller practiced in limited fashion last week and is expected to be ready for a Week 3 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
Desperate fantasy managers can give Jones a look on the waiver wire this week, though they should be prudent when investing in the 25-year-old journeyman. With the return of Kamara and Miller on the horizon, Jones will likely be nothing more than a one-week band-aid for the Saints and his fantasy managers. He can be deployed as a FLEX option this week against the Packers.
