NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 1/19/23

We are officially at the time of the year when each game is of its utmost importance as teams gauge whether they are a playoff contender, a seller or on the bubble. Tonight we have a large 13-game slate and four teams playing on a back-to-back: Boston, New York Islanders, Dallas and Tampa bay. The currently live top-3 highest implied team totals are: Florida with 4.1, Vegas with 3.8 and Columbus with 3.7 goals. I will do my best in guiding you through this thirteen-game slate on DraftKings and FanDuel starting at 7:00 p.m. EST.

Vegas Odds for the Day

Goalies

Filip Gustavsson- DK $7.1K || FD $7.9K

Opponent - Carolina Hurricanes

For the number of games on the slate tonight, there are not many ‘safe’ options, despite goaltenders being in ‘good’ matchups. Gustavsson fits the bill though thanks to the sheer volume of shots that the Hurricanes take – first in the league in the last 10 games with 39.08 Shots Per 60 – and the fact that the Hurricanes sit closer to the middle of the league in Goals For Per 60 – 2.61 –, both over their last 10 games. Gustavsson himself is on quite the run of form going 10-3 from November to January. If he has not won the starting spot over fellow netminder Marc-Andre Fleury, he is surely making a strong case for it. Over Gustavsson’s last five games, he has posted below 15 fantasy points just once. Thanks to his extremely forgiving salary, it will not take much for him to reach value tonight.

Others To Consider (Cash/GPP): Ersson (DK $8.4K || FD $8.1K), Quick (DK $7.5K || FD $8.2K)

Centers

Alexander Barkov-DK $6.5K || FD $7.8K

Opponent - Montreal Canadiens

Barkov is a perfect candidate tonight at center thanks to his manageable salary and half-way decent matchup against the Canadiens. Expected starter Montembeault has been great for them and he is the tenth-best goalie in the league when starting 5 or more games in Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60 – 0.5 –, however, his team is not supporting him. Over the last 10 games, Montreal is the third-worst team in Shots Against Per 60 – 34.95 –, the second-worst in Scoring Chances Against Per 60 – 35.7 – and the ninth-worst team in Goals Against Per 60 – 3.15 –. If not for Montembeault, Montreal would be losing by 5 or 6 goals a game and playing against a ‘high-powered’ offense like Florida, he could be in for it. Over Barkov’s last five games, he has 3 goals, 4 assists and 10 shots.

Jack Roslovic- DK $4K || FD $4.4K

Opponent - Anaheim Ducks

Roslovic is the key to breaking the slate. The centerman is currently slotted between Johnny “Hockey” Gaudreau and Patrik Laine. Roslovic also plays on the second power-play unit and over his last five games, he has 5 assists, 5 shots and 5 blocked shots. The shot volume is not there and nor will it be. Roslovic is a pass-first player and a sacrificial player, willing to give up his body to stop a shot. This is the perfect chance though for Roslovic to score his fourth goal of the season. Anaheim is the most forgiving defense over the last 10 games, they are the worst in Shots Against Per 60 – 41.93 –, Scoring Chances Against Per 60 – 39.52 – and Goals Against Per 60 – 4.11 –.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Eichel (DK $7.7K || FD $9K), Zegras (DK $5.2K || FD $6.1K)

Wings

Patrik Laine- DK $6.5K || FD $7.4K

Opponent - Anaheim Ducks

Laine could possibly become one of the top value plays on the slate, despite his ‘higher’ salary. The winger should see the Ducks’ second-line for most of the game who is notoriously awful at defense, not to exclude the team’s overall poor defense as aforementioned. Laine is currently firing on all cylinders…literally. Over his last five games, he has 3 goals, 3 assists and 22 shots. The goal department has dried up recently with all 3 goals coming against Detroit, but Anaheim offers the perfect opportunity to bounce back into the goal column.

Anton Lundell- DK $3.7K || FD $5K

Opponent - Montreal Canadiens

It is hard to gauge exactly where Lundell sits on the individual skill meter. Over his last five games he has 2 goals, 1 assist and 19 shots. However, it was not until recently that he was slotted alongside fellow Finn, Alexander Barkov. Lundell is playing much-improved hockey with his promotion, but is it due to Barkov’s skill or is Lundell truly thriving with increased playing time and a bigger opportunity to produce? Either way, he is playing the aforementioned Canadiens who own a poor defense and for close to the minimum salary, Lundell is a great one-off if you are not already stacking the Panthers.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Ovechkin (DK $9K || FD $9.4K), Tippett (DK $4.7K || FD $6.3K)

Defense

Adam Boqvist- DK $3K || FD $4.3K

Opponent - Anaheim Ducks

We are back once again to highlight Boqvist in an even better matchup. The power-play quarterback still has yet to truly surface to expectations since he was drafted by the Blackhawks, however, he continues to get opportunity after opportunity. It is only a matter of time until he finally breaks through right? In his last five games, he has 3 assists, 11 shots and 5 blocked shots.

Vince Dunn- DK $4.7K || FD $6.1K

Opponent - New Jersey Devils

On the flip side of things, we will turn right back around to Dunn who is on the opposite end of the production spectrum. Over his last five games, he has 2 goals, 3 assists, 8 shots and 3 blocked shots. His peripherals have gone down a tick or two, although he may be getting a tad bit more ice time if fellow blueliner Justin Schultz misses his duel with the Devils. This would also provide Dunn the chance to hop back on the top power-play unit for Seattle. In what will be a fast-paced matchup, he should easily hit value.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Gustafsson (DK $5.1K || FD $5.5K), Rielly (DK $4.9K || FD $5.9K)
