RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - U.S. Open

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the U.S. Open. Here are some under the radar plays and picks for this week's event.

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud of our weekly PGA “One and Done” column. In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

I don't know how fired up any of us were to turn in our Safeway Open selections last week, but it turned out to be a solid event all around, with Josh capturing a great T7 finish from Sam Burns, while Spencer and I had matching T29s from HV3 and Brendan Steele.

Last week was fun and all, but we're down to serious business this week for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. My lead has grown to be pretty sizable in this contest, but either of the guys can get right back in this thing (wink, wink) by picking the winner this week. Let's go!

One And Done Staff Picks Overview

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for a second season.

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course that highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

One and Done Selections - U.S. Open

Joe Nicely - Tony Finau

Alternate - Justin Thomas

Spencer is a long-time friend and Josh is a nice young kid that just got married, so I'm not gonna talk any trash to my buddies as we head into the year's second major championship with TEAM J-NICE leading in this OAD contest, I'm just gonna keep my head down and continue to grind. I might even just write a nice little poem at the end of this week's pick for my friends.

It goes without saying that 2020 has been an extremely weird year and the same goes for this OAD contest, with the COVID-19 layoff throwing the PGA Tour schedule for an absolute. I had my major championship plays for the year mapped out in broad strokes early on, but I've been thrown for a loop a bit this week, as my planned U.S. Open pick Brooks Koepka has been forced to W/D from the tournament with an injury. Unfortunately, my Option 1 and 1A pivots, DJ and Xander, are no longer available to me. However, Justin Thomas is - and would be the prudent play for me here - but like I did at the PGA Championship with Collin Morikawa, I'm going with my heart this week.

I don't know who the bigger Tony Finau truther is, me or Spencer, but I'm going with our guy this week. No, he hasn't won a big (or small) tournament lately, but he's been beautifully consistent in major championships, posting four top-five finishes in his last nine major starts.

I love Tony on long golf courses. I love Tony on hard golf courses. I love Tony on Utah courses and Puerto Rico courses and Tennessee courses and New York courses. I love when Tony top-10s and I love when Tony top-fives and I love that Tony has nine lives. I love Tony with his ankle broken and I love Tony with his ankle straight and I love being able to say...checkmate.

Spencer Aguiar - Jon Rahm

Alternate - Bryson DeChambeau

This contest has gotten completely away from me since the restart. I managed to take a pretty substantial lead before the COVID shutdown and transform it into a trainwreck at all turns over the previous two months. Joe's "victory" with Xander Schauffele at the Tour Championship essentially put a nail in this competition, and I couldn't think of a more fitting way to get eliminated than a guy finishing second but getting first-place money.

With all that being said, the attempted comeback has to start somewhere, and I haven't been shy about saving Jon Rahm for the U.S. Open this year. Do I trust him? Not as far as I could throw him. But win equity is what I need to chase, and there might not be anyone in this field that possesses the Spaniard's upside.

According to my model, Rahm ranks first in strokes gained total, third in overall bogey avoidance, fourth in sand save percentage, first in three-putt percentage and first in total driving. His ability to drive the ball straight and long makes him the man to beat in my eyes, and I will need just that at this stage to start the comeback of all comebacks.

Yearly Cuts Made - 19/25

Josh Bennett - Justin Thomas

Alternate - Matthew Fitzpatrick

I don’t have a ton of the big guns left, but I did save JT specifically for this tournament. His game is perfect for a US Open setup, and luckily he’s been in some good form other than a relatively cold putter. He will hit the ball long and mostly straight being a great ball-striker, and he’s one of the best iron players in the world. Even though his putter is not running hot, that matters a little less on a course that will not give up a ton of birdies anyway. This will likely be a weekend to grind out pars, and being as good as he is with his irons he will give himself plenty of easy chances to walk off the greens with pars. If he can dial in his putter, he could even run away with this thing. Hopefully that’s the case for me, there is a lot of room between me these two in this contest to make up quickly.
