ANALYSIS: The Detroit Lions are off to an 0-4 start to the 2021 season, which should surprise nobody. However, what has been surprising is the production we've seen so far from the team's passing game. Jared Goff has thrown for 1,100 yards through four games, the 11th most passing yards in the league. His 96.8 quarterback rating is the highest rating he's had since his breakout 2018 season, when he threw for 4,688 yards and 32 scores. One of the biggest beneficiaries of the Lions' surprisingly effective passing game has been second-year receiver Quintez Cephus.
Through four games, Cephus has caught 12 of his 19 targets for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He led the team in receiving yards in Week 4 against the Chicago Bears, catching four passes for 83 yards. Cephus and fifth-year veteran Kalif Raymond have been the team's two leading receivers so far. Raymond has caught 14 of his 22 targets for 182 yards and two touchdowns through four games. However, Cephus has had a firm advantage in receiver snaps for two of the past three weeks. In Week 4, he logged 87% of the snaps while Raymond logged 75%. In Week 2, Cephus logged 89% to Raymond's 63%.
The Lions have one of the league's worst defenses. They've allowed 29.8 points per game to opponents so far, the fourth-most in the league. This means that the offense will continue to be chasing points and Goff will be forced to throw. T.J. Hockenson and D'Andre Swift will soak up a significant amount of targets, but the receivers should get some love, too. Cephus is worth an add for anyone in need of receiver help in leagues of 14 teams or deeper. He's also roster-worthy in more shallow leagues that start three receivers.
