4 days agoDenver Broncos running back Javonte Williams led the backfield in carries for the second straight week, but he didn't do much with his opportunities in the 11-10 win over the visiting San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. He racked up 58 rushing yards on his 15 carries (3.9 yards per carry) while catching three of his five targets in the passing game for just two yards. Williams only had three more carries than backfield mate Melvin Gordon III, who caught two more passes and scored the team's only offensive touchdown in a game that was dominated by defense. Just like last year, the 22-year-old is being held back in fantasy by the presence of Gordon, and it's preventing him from having weekly RB1 upside. Williams will take on a Las Vegas Raiders defense in Week 4 that is allowing just over 100 yards per game on the ground through three weeks.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com

6 days agoDenver Broncos running back Javonte Williams was out-carried by backfield mate Melvin Gordon III in the season opener, but that wasn't the case in the Week 2 win over the Houston Texans, when Williams had 15 carries for 75 yards. He added a 10-yard catch after posting 11 receptions in Week 1. Gordon isn't going to go away in this backfield, which will infuriate Williams' fantasy managers, but he's still the 1A to Gordon's 1B moving forward. The 23-year-old has yet to find the end zone in 2022, but his involvement in the offense makes him a must-start, high-end RB2 each week, even against a San Francisco 49ers defense that has allowed the second-fewest rushing yards per game (67.5) through the first two weeks.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Pro Football Reference

2 weeks agoDenver Broncos running back Javonte Williams out-carried backfield mate Melvin Gordon III 15 to 10 in the Week 2 win over the Houston Texans. However, he also went from 11 receptions in Week 1 to just one (four targets) for a 10-yard gain on Sunday. Williams picked up a team-high 75 yards on his 15 carries for a healthy 5.0 yards per carry in the 16-9 victory. Gordon remains a thorn in Williams' side for fantasy purposes, and it hasn't helped that Denver's offense hasn't looked great at all under quarterback Russell Wilson through the first two games of the season. The 22-year-old should continue to operate as the 1A to Gordon's 1B heading into a tough matchup in Week 3 against the San Francisco 49ers. Williams still has a solid weekly floor for touches.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com

2 weeks agoDenver Broncos running back Javonte Williams ran the ball seven times for 43 yards (6.1 average per carry) in the Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He also caught a whopping 11 passes, the second-most in franchise history for an RB in a single game. Nearly half of his receptions (five) came on screen passes. The Broncos ran only 11 screens with Williams on the field in his entire rookie season in 2021, so it's a notable development early in 2022. Head coach Nathaniel Hackett detailed in the offseason why getting the ball to RBs in the passing game was so important to his offense. Though Melvin Gordon III out-carried Williams 12 to seven in Week 1, Williams out-touched his teammate 18-14. The Broncos are expected to continue getting the ball to Williams in creative ways in Week 2 against the Texans. The second-year back is a must-start, high-end RB2.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Nick Kosmider

2 weeks agoDenver Broncos running back Javonte Williams was out-carried seven to 12 by backfield mate Melvin Gordon III in Monday night's Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, but Williams more than made up for it by catching a team-high 11 passes for 65 yards on 12 targets. He gained 43 yards on his seven carries, including a costly goal-line fumble at the goal line. Fantasy managers may still be frustrated by the presence of Gordon stealing touches from the 22-year-old second-year back, but quarterback Russell Wilson should still give Williams a high weekly floor as a high-end RB2/low-end RB1. Williams is an elite tackle-breaker and looked very explosive to open the season. In Week 2 against the Texans, he's an absolute must-start against a defense that nearly allowed 200 rushing yards to the Colts' Jonathan Taylor.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: NFL.com
Share:
3 weeks agoDenver Broncos second-year running back Javonte Williams has RB1 upside in fantasy heading into his second year in the league. But that's only if the Broncos new coaching staff unleashes him as the true leader of this backfield. The problem is Melvin Gordon III remains in the picture, and head coach Nathaniel Hackett suggested this week that he could "ride the hot hand." Both RBs had 203 carries in 2021 as they split the backfield down the middle. The expectation is that Williams will see more work in 2022, but Gordon's presence makes him more of a high-end RB2 in fantasy lineups than a true RB1, starting on Monday night against a Seattle Seahawks defense that was very vulnerable to the position last year. Even though there's some doubt as to what the touch split will look like this Monday, Williams should be in all starting lineups.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: RotoBaller
Share:
3 weeks agoDenver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett hinted that he may ride the hot hand between running backs Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon III in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night. "I've always been a true believer in you want to roll with the hot hand. One guy gets going, you want to be sure to keep feeding that person. But I think they're going to be great complements to each other," Hackett said. Most reports this offseason suggested that the new coaching staff is ready to hand the keys to Williams, a second-year back that looked more explosive than Gordon last year despite a near-even timeshare. But with other reports suggesting it will be more of a committee, it's made Williams more of an RB2 than a true RB1 in 2022. Gordon will merely be a shaky RB3/flex against the Seahawks.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: DNVR Sports - Zac Stevens
Share:
4 weeks agoESPN.com's Dan Graziano writes that the Denver Broncos have major plans for second-year running back Javonte Williams in 2022. The fantasy community is concerned about a repeat of last year, when Williams and Melvin Gordon III split the workload down the middle. The Broncos were ready to let Gordon leave before he returned to them late in free agency. Gordon will still likely have a role after a strong training camp, but it's expected to be a far more secondary role than he had last year as Williams takes control of this backfield. There have been a few reports suggesting that a 50/50 timeshare could once again be in the cards, which would certainly infuriate any Williams owners. Until we know for sure, he's a strong RB2 pick with clear RB1 upside in what will be an improved Denver offense under new quarterback Russell Wilson.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Dan Graziano
Share:
1 month agoDenver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon III said that the coaching staff wants Javonte Williams "to be the guy" after he received the first snaps at training camp practice on Wednesday. It was expected that Williams would be more of the 1A to Gordon's 1B this year after the two basically split carries down the middle in 2021. The second-year running back is much more explosive with more big-play ability in an offense that should be more productive with quarterback Russell Wilson now in town. However, Gordon isn't going away, which caps Williams' fantasy ceiling in Year 2. Still, Williams will be a high-end RB2 target in fantasy drafts, and he has obvious RB1 upside if Gordon gets injured or put in the doghouse at any point in 2022.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: DNVR Sports - Zac Stevens
Share:
2 months agoDenver Broncos offensive coordinator Justin Outten is really excited for the running back room this year, but he said the RBs will be on a pitch count throughout the season. Here we go again. Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon III were in a near-even timeshare for all of the 2021 season, and they finished with very similar numbers as a result. Williams had 203 carries for 903 yards and four touchdowns, adding 43 catches for 316 yards and three more scores. Gordon had 203 carries for 918 yards and eight TDs, adding 28 catches for 213 yards and two more TDs through the air. Williams has clear RB1 upside in an offense that should be much more explosive with quarterback Russell Wilson at the helm, but Gordon's presence might make him more of a high-end RB2 target in fantasy drafts in single-year leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: DNVR Sports - Zac Stevens
Share:
2 months agoDenver Broncos running back Javonte Williams could be unleashed in the newly revamped offense this season, according to team reporter Cecil Lammey. Melvin Gordon III was brought back to the Denver backfield on a one-year deal well after free agency opened so it is no surprise that the young stud running back might be in for a significant workload. Williams has been getting most of the first-team reps during camp, as in six out of the seven practices he has worked with the starters. If Williams does in fact lead the way in a 70-30 split, he could be valued as an elite RB1 with league-winning upside. As of now, his draft price reflects Gordon having a similar role to last season, where the two saw a dead-even split.--Tommy Adamopoulos - RotoBallerSource: Cecil Lammey
Share:
2 months agoDenver Broncos second-year running back Javonte Williams has gotten the first look with the starters each day of training camp practice so far, but Melvin Gordon has also received some snaps with the starters as well. Head coach Nathaniel Hackett continues to say he sees an active role for both players in the offense. The Broncos have big plans for Williams, but Gordon was re-signed to help carry the load in the backfield. Last year, Gordon was often the nominal starter on game days, but that's likely to be flipped in 2022. Depending on the actual touch distribution on a weekly basis, Williams has clear RB1 upside in an offense that should be much more explosive with quarterback Russell Wilson at the controls. Gordon, meanwhile, will be a handcuff options/RB3/flex in fantasy.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold
Share:
2 months agoDenver Broncos second-year running back Javonte Williams suggested during organized team activities that the team's RBs will be adjusting to a bigger role in the passing game with head coach Nathaniel Hackett running the offense. "We're pretty much wide receivers and running backs this year," Williams said. "We have to learn all the different (route) concepts." With Hackett serving as the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator the last three seasons, they led the NFL with a 111.2 team passer rating when targeting RBs, with 19 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Even though Williams will be splitting touches with Melvin Gordon again in 2022, he should be the 1A in his second season and will be an attractive high-end RB2, especially if he sees more pass-game work.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Nick Kosmider
Share:
4 months agoDenver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon III is ready to compete with second-year back Javonte Williams for the team's 1A role in 2022. Gordon had two 900-yard rushing seasons in his first two years with the team despite splitting carries with Phillip Lindsay in 2020 and Williams last year. But Williams is expected to earn a promotion this year after rushing for over 900 yards in his rookie season as the 1B back behind Gordon, especially after Gordon re-signed at a pay cut from his last two seasons. Gordon still has impressive explosion and a good combination of speed and size, and he ranks fourth among active RBs with 6,144 career rushing yards. However, Williams is expected to be the clear lead back this year, making Gordon more of a low-ceiling RB3/flex for fantasy managers or a handcuff for Williams.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: 9News - Mike Klis
Share:
5 months agoDenver Broncos running backs Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon III will again split carries in 2022. Last year, Williams and Gordon each finished with 203 carries, with Williams rushing for 903 yards and Gordon rushing for a team-high 918 yards. With quarterback Russell Wilson now in town, the Broncos aren't looking to become a run-first offense. Williams is expected to take slightly more carries this season, but head coach Nathaniel Hackett has promised to keep the RBs busy. Hackett also said that third-stringer Mike Boone will have at least some role in the offense as well. Both Williams and Gordon should remain fantasy relevant, especially with Wilson now under center, but Williams' potential for a huge ceiling evaporated when Denver re-signed Gordon to share the workload.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Legwold
