10 hours agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Graham Aschcraft (toe) has added a changeup to his arsenal of a fastball, cutter, slider and sinker. He did not make any mechanical adjustments in the offseason, but he's worked on improving how he times his delivery. Ashcraft is slightly behind the others pitchers in camp after having surgery in the offseason to fix fractures to the big and second toes of his right foot in September. The 26-year-old has still thrown off a mound three times and is considered on track for Opening Day, though. Ashcraft's toe injury affected him late in the year, and he finished 7-9 with a 4.76 ERA overall in 26 starts in 2023. He started off with a 2.00 ERA in his first six starts. If Ashcraft's new changeup can generate more swings and misses, he could become a streaming option in deep-mixed leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Mark Sheldon
10 hours agoLos Angeles Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux (knee), who suffered a season-ending knee injury in spring training last year, said he expects to be in the lineup on Thursday against the San Diego Padres for the Cactus League opener on Thursday. Lux ditched the knee brace he had been wearing on his surgically repaired right knee last week, although he's still wearing a compression sleeve after having surgery to fix both his ACL and LCL. The 26-year-old has been fully cleared otherwise, though, and will be LA's starting shortstop in 2024. The former first-rounder was pretty mediocre in 2021 and 2022 for the Dodgers, hitting .261 with 13 homers, 88 RBI and 11 steals in 231 games. Lux has shown solid plate discipline and resides in an excellent offense, but hitting at the bottom of the Dodgers' lineup isn't going to give him a ton of upside, and he's probably not going to run all that much coming off major knee surgery.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Orange County Register - Bill Plunkett
11 hours agoLos Angeles Angels infielder Luis Rengifo (biceps) told Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com that he is fully healthy after recovering from surgery to address his torn left biceps tendon. The injury kept him sidelined for most of September and October of last season, though he still managed to play while slashing .264/.339/.444 with a 114 wRC+. The Angels continue to seek reinforcements on the offensive side, and Rengifo offers just that. Prospective fantasy managers will get a glimpse into his outlook when the Angels kick off their Spring Training games this weekend.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBallerSource: Rhett Bollinger
11 hours agoLos Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow is expected to start a game during the team's season-opening, two-game series against the San Diego Padres in Korea. The series, which begins on March 20th, officially kicks off the 2024 MLB regular season. Glasnow was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers this season after an incredible run with the Tampa Bay Rays. He maintained a sub-2.75 xFIP in each of his last four years with Tampa, averaging 12.77 K/9 during that span. He figures to be a key fantasy contributor, as well as an integral part of the Dodgers' pursuit of a World Series victory.--Andersen Pickard - RotoBallerSource: Fabian Ardaya
15 hours agoFirst baseman Eric Hosmer announced his retirement from professional baseball on social media on Wednesday. Hosmer never latched on with another team after he was released by the Chicago Cubs last May. The 34-year-old left-handed hitter played in just 31 games in 2023 and went 22-for-94 (.234) with two homers and 14 RBI before getting released. An All-Star with the Kansas City Royals in 2016, Hosmer had a career .276/.335/.427 slash line, 198 home runs and 893 RBI in 13 major-league seasons, also winning four Gold Gloves at first base. He won a World Series ring with the Royals in 2015 and quickly started to decline after signing a big contract as a free agent with the San Diego Padres before the 2018 season. In a two-year span with KC from 2016-17, Hosmer hit .292 with 50 homers and 198 RBI in 320 games.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Eric Hosmer
16 hours agoFree-agent reliever Derek Law agreed with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday on a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, according to sources. The deal would pay Law $1.5 million with $500,000 in incentives for games pitched if he's in the majors. The contract also includes three opt-out clauses. The 33-year-old veteran right-hander has seven years of big-league experience and had a 3.60 ERA (4.62 FIP) and 1.38 WHIP with two saves, 26 walks and 45 strikeouts in 55 innings over 54 appearances (three starts) for the Cincinnati Reds last year. If Law makes the Nationals roster out of spring training, he'd likely serve in a middle-relief bullpen role. Fantasy managers can ignore him.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: FanSided - Robert Murray
16 hours agoWashington Nationals outfielder Stone Garrett (ankle, leg) is mostly a full participant in camp right now, but he's not all the way back yet since breaking his left fibula and suffering damage to his ankle while crashing into the wall at Yankee Stadium last summer. He is running at full speed and has taken live batting practice off a pitcher, but he's been held out of some baserunning drills and won't be in the lineup when Grapefruit League action kicks off on Saturday. The Nats want to ease the 28-year-old back into the fold, but they're not ruling out Garrett being ready for Opening Day. In his first year in D.C. in 2023, Garrett hit .269 (63-for-234) with nine homers and 40 RBI in 89 games but his 30% strikeout rate doesn't bode well for future success, and the Nationals have plenty of outfield prospects that could make their debuts in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Mark Zuckerman
16 hours agoKansas City Royals right-hander Brady Singer (back) is scheduled to make his Cactus League debut next Wednesday, Feb. 28, against the Seattle Mariners. Singer isn't limited at all at spring training this year despite ending the 2023 season on the injured list with a back strain. The 27-year-old former first-round pick by the Royals in 2018 out of Florida went 8-11 with a career-worst 5.52 ERA (4.29 FIP) and 1.45 WHIP with 49 walks and 133 strikeouts in a career-high 159 2/3 innings over 29 starts in his fourth year in the big leagues. It was a highly disappointing year for the former top prospect just hasn't fooled hitters much and probably needs to add to his arsenal in order to become interesting to fantasy managers in mixed leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Anne Rogers
16 hours agoThe Boston Red Sox are among the teams interested in adding free-agent infielder Gio Urshela, according to a source. In addition to Boston, the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, and Miami Marlins have been looking at Urshela. His market has been slow to develop this offseason. The 32-year-old veteran is best known for three strong years with the Yankees from 2019-21. He's seen most of his appearances (585 of 643) at third base, where the Red Sox already have Rafael Devers. If signed, the Red Sox likely would view Urshela as a right-handed option at first base as an upgrade over Bobby Dalbec while providing insurance for Devers at the hot corner. Urshela fractured his pelvis in June and played only 62 games for the Angels in 2023.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MassLive.com - Chris Cotillo
16 hours agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Pivetta pitched as a starter and reliever in 2023 but appears to be a lock for the Opening Day starting rotation this year. The 31-year-old Canadian finished his year strong and ultimately went 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA (3.96 FIP), a 1.12 WHIP, one save, 50 walks and 183 strikeouts in 142 2/3 innings over 38 appearances (16 starts). Fantasy managers should have reservations about him in a starting role, though, after he had a 4.66 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 29 walks and 105 strikeouts in his 16 starts. Going deep into games could be an issue as well. At best, consider Pivetta as an option to fill out your starting rotation in deep-mixed leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Jen McCaffrey
16 hours agoTampa Bay Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said that infielder Jose Caballero is still expected to be the team's Opening Day shortstop despite the addition of Amed Rosario on a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Tuesday. Rosario is going to bounce around between the middle infield and corner outfield against left-handed pitching. The 27-year-old Caballero was acquired from the Mariners in an offseason trade to give the Rays a backup plan in the wake of Wander Franco's off-the-field issues. Taylor Walls (hip) is going to miss the first month of the season, but he'll give Tampa another option at the 6 when he returns. Caballero didn't display much power in his first taste of big-league action in 2023 and is probably only going to be attractive in AL-only leagues for his speed -- he stole 26 bases in 104 games for Seattle in 2023.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Tampa Bay Times - Marc Topkin
16 hours agoTampa Bay Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said that the plan is to play infielder Amed Rosario at both middle-infield positions and in the corner-outfield spots in 2024 after signing him to a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Tuesday. Rosario will give the Rays more insurance at the 6 with Wander Franco potentially never playing for the team again given his off-the-field issues, but Jose Caballero will remain the primary option at shortstop. The 28-year-old Rosario has been a lefty killer in his career, so between multiple positions with the Rays in 2024, the Dominican infielder should play rather regularly when the club faces a left-handed pitcher. He'll be most attractive as a low-cost DFS play against southpaws, but with modest power and speed, Rosario's fantasy ceiling is low.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Tampa Bay Times - Marc Topkin
16 hours agoArizona Diamondbacks left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will start the team's Cactus League opener on Friday against the Colorado Rockies, according to manager Torey Lovullo. The Diamondbacks added Rodriguez to their starting rotation in the offseason by signing him to a four-year, $74 million deal in free agency, and he'll slot in behind Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly as the club's No. 3 starter. The 30-year-old veteran southpaw went 13-9 with a career-best 3.30 ERA (3.66 FIP) and career-best 1.15 WHIP with 48 walks and 143 strikeouts in 26 starts covering 152 2/3 innings in 2023 in his second year with the Detroit Tigers. His 4.04 xERA indicates he was a bit lucky, though, and E-Rod allowed plenty of hard contact. Rodriguez will be moving to a much tougher division and is a bit of an injury risk, so fantasy managers should look to target him as more of a No. 4 starter in 2024 drafts.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Arizona Republic - Theo Mackie
16 hours agoThere has been no talk at spring training of New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells working out at other positions, according to manager Aaron Boone. "Right now, I just want him to focus on our staff," Boone said. After trading away Kyle Higashioka in the Juan Soto trade in the offseason, the Yanks now have two primary catching options for 2024 -- Wells and Jose Trevino. Wells has the more potent bat, but Trevino is more advanced defensively. Wells, 24, had four homers in 70 at-bats in just 19 games in his big-league debut last year. There's plenty of power intrigue with the left-handed hitter, but because he and Trevino will likely end up splitting playing time more evenly, Wells probably won't become a realistic option in two-catcher fantasy leagues in 2024 unless Trevino misses time due to an injury.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Bryan Hoch
17 hours agoNew York Yankees manager Aaron Boone sees second baseman Gleyber Torres hitting between fourth and sixth in the lineup this year, and also in the leadoff spot when needed. Boone thinks Torres is highly motivated heading into the final year of his current deal and thinks he can improve as a defender as well. Hitting in the heart of New York's improved batting order would make the 27-year-old infielder even more attractive as a top-five fantasy second baseman. DJ LeMahieu, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge are expected to fill the top three spots in the lineup for the Bombers. Torres' numbers don't exactly jump off the page, but don't forget that he's now reached 24 home runs in four of his five full seasons in the majors while also recording double-digit stolen bases in each of the last three campaigns.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Daily News - Gary Phillips
