Yan Gomes, Kurt Suzuki To Split Playing Time
6 years agoWashington Nationals manager Dave Martinez intends to have catchers Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki split playing time this year. Both Gomes and Suzuki had strong 2018 seasons, but they are both on board with a timeshare at the position and are hoping it'll make the team stronger overall. Gomes was an All-Star last year, posting a .726 OPS and 2.6 wins above replacement. Suzuki had a .776 OPS and 2.1 WAR in a timeshare in Atlanta. Both catchers will also see late-inning pinch-hit duties if they don't start that day. Gomes has the better offensive skill set and is likely to see more starts, but with both of them sharing time it limits their fantasy upside. Gomes is a low-end catcher in normal mixed leagues, but they're both better off used as your second backstop in two-catcher leagues.
