Wayne Gallman 2021 Outlook: Just Depth
4 years agoAs a former fourth round pick, Wayne Gallman has done well to have the career he's had thus far. Gallman had about a six week stretch where he was quite useful last season, posting low RB1/high RB2 numbers in place of an injured Saquon Barkley. Eventually, Gallman came back down to reality as he's just your basic replacement level player. Now in San Francisco, Gallman finds himself in a better situation to produce if he gets the opportunity, but a much worse situation from a depth chart perspective. Gallman was signed to a one-year deal and can be reasonably cut at any point. He is no lock to make the team and even if he does, he seems certain to be behind Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, and possibly behind rookies Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell as well. In 2020, we saw four different backs operate as the lead back in San Francisco and all were able to produce. If that ends up being Gallman at some point, he's worth rostering. But unless a slew of injuries ravage the 49ers' depth chart over the summer, Gallman should not be on anyone's draft board.
