Vince Velasquez Leave's Early With Right-Elbow Discomfort
Vince Velasquez (elbow) left his start early on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays due to right-elbow discomfort, the team announced. Velasquez's velocity took a dip in the ballgame as well, and he was removed in the bottom of the fourth inning after he allowed a run on two hits (one home run) while walking one and striking out two in three innings of work. There's a good chance the 30-year-old veteran will need to go on the injured list, but we'll update you when we know more about the injury. Before his start against Tampa, Velasquez had an 18-inning scoreless streak going and had an impressive 3.06 ERA (3.79 FIP), 1.17 WHIP, 12 walks and 32 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings over his first six starts of the year.

Vince Velasquez Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery
Vince Velasquez (elbow) underwent season-ending right elbow surgery, according to sources. It's a pretty disappointing development for everyone involved after Velasquez was initially diagnosed with elbow inflammation when he landed on the injured list on May 28. The 31-year-old right-hander was in the midst of a solid first season in Pittsburgh before the injury, going 4-4 with a 3.86 ERA (3.90 FIP), 1.31 WHIP, 14 walks and 37 strikeouts in eight starts covering 37 1/3 innings. It's a tough development for Vasquez, as he's set to be a free agent this winter. Fantasy managers in deep-mixed, single-year leagues that had been stashing him can now safely send him to the waiver wire.

Vince Velasquez Placed On The 15-Day Injured List
Vince Velasquez (elbow) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort. Velasquez, who was just activated from the IL prior to Saturday's start against the Mariners, only lasted two innings in the outing before being pulled. He's heading for his second stint on the injured list due to inflammation in the same elbow. He should be out a while this second time around. Meanwhile, Cody Bolton was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.

Vince Velasquez Removed With Elbow Discomfort
Vince Velasquez (elbow) was removed from Saturday's start against the Seattle Mariners with right elbow discomfort. He allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three across two innings before leaving. The 30-year-old just returned from the injured list on Saturday after missing the last few weeks with elbow inflammation. He exited Saturday's game with inflammation in the same elbow and is considered day-to-day. Velasquez owns a 3.86 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 37 strikeouts over 37 1/3 innings in 2023. The veteran right-hander's next start is in question, and the Pirates should have an update on Velasquez after further evaluation.
