Tyler Glasnow Unveils Cutter-Slider Hybrid
4 years agoTampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow showed off his new breaking pitch and his familiar fastball velocity in his spring debut against the Twins on Monday. He blew away Minnesota with a 10-pitch first inning but allowed two runs on two hits (one homer) with three walks and three strikeouts in his 1 2/3 innings. Glasnow hit 100 mph four times in the first inning and said he felt good about the outing, as he was mostly around the zone. He mixed in a few cutter-slider breaking balls that clocked in around 86-87 mph. The 27-year-old can get into trouble when he isn't throwing his curveball for a strike, so he just needs his new pitch to be a legitimate offering that can keep hitters honest. Glasnow's immense strikeout upside -- 38.2 percent strikeout rate in 2020 -- will depend a lot on his new pitch and whether he can throw it for strikes consistently.
