Tua Tagovailoa Progressing As Downfield Passer?
3 years agoMiami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed two deep passes to new wide receiver Tyreek Hill -- for 45 and 55 yards -- at Thursday's offseason practice. One of the main criticisms of Tagovailoa since he entered the league was his perceived inability to throw the ball deep. Since his rookie season, he ranks 30th among qualified passers in average air yards per attempt at 7.13 yards. However, Tagovailoa led the league last year in completion percentage on passes at least 25 yards downfield by completing 50% of them, although he attempted just 18 such passes, second-fewest in the league. The 24-year-old claims he didn't throw deep much in 2021 because of the team's play-calling. The former fifth overall pick feels more confident going deep now and worked for much of the offseason to improve his arm strength and mobility. Having Hill and Jaylen Waddle as his top two receivers will help tremendously as well, and Tagovailoa could make a huge third-year leap in 2022.
