Thomas Szapucki Needs Season-Ending Surgery
3 years agoNew York Mets left-hander Thomas Szapucki (elbow) will need season-ending ulnar nerve transposition surgery, according to sources. The team's 10th-ranked prospect, per MLB Pipeline, made his major league debut last month but has had trouble with injuries early in his career. Szapucki has already had Tommy John surgery, but the Mets expect him to be ready next spring. The 25-year-old southpaw allowed six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in his big league debut against the Atlanta Braves on June 30. Before the call-up, he had a 4.10 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 41/28 K/BB in 10 outings (nine starts) over 41 2/3 innings with Triple-A Syracuse. Szapucki features a low-90s heater and an impressive curveball, but he'll have to continue his development early next season. It's looking more likely that he'll be ticketed for a relief role in the future.
