Shohei Ohtani's Splitter Is Downright Nasty
4 years agoLos Angeles Angels starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani's split-fingered fastball is one of the most unhittable pitches in baseball. Hitters went 2-for-55 with 35 strikeouts against the pitch in 2018. Hitters are 0-for-19 with 18 K's against the pitch in 20 plate appearances so far in 2021. Of 23 swings at the pitch, hitters have whiffed 17 times. As a result, his splitter is generating the highest swing-and-miss rate of any pitch in baseball. Ohtani's splitter is also averaging 89.9 mph this year, up from 87.3 mph he averaged as a rookie. The reason why his splitter is so hard to hit is because it looks almost identical to his four-seam fastball, until it drops vertically out of the zone. The 26-year-old Japanese two-way star is doing it all this year with his arm and bat, making him a must-start fantasy asset.
