Sergio Garcia's Putter Will Seal His Fate in Memphis

Sergio Garcia will be a popular option this week because he lead the field from tee to green at the 3M Open in his most recent start. Unfortunately, Garcia was only able to muster a 25th-place finish because he lost 7.3 strokes putting. The sentiment surrounding Garcia is that he has to experience positive regression with the putter. I don't know what data exists for us to believe that. The Spaniard has lost strokes putting in 17 of his last 20 starts. Over an extremely large sample size, the former Masters champion only gains strokes putting around 15% of the time. I don't think it is a foregone conclusion that there is a great deal of improvement with Garcia's putting. If anything, I find it to be more likely that his ball-striking regresses to his baseline. There are other similarly priced players I prefer over Garcia.
