Sandy Alcantara 2022 Player Outlook: Ace Continuing to Rise
3 years agoMiami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara is starting to establish himself as one of the bright young stars in the game. He has seen improvement every season since his debut in 2017 and finished 2021 going 9-15 with a 3.19 ERA and 201 strikeouts in 205 innings. The combination of strikeout potential and durability is what makes Alcantara such a good pick in 2022.
Only four pitchers tossed 200 innings last season, and of those four, Alcantara had the highest chase rate being in the 95th percentile. His WOBA against has improved every year, going from .375 in 2017 to .279 last season and he is continuing to figure out who he is as a big-league pitcher. He essentially eliminated throwing the curveball last season which had a 1.167 SLG against in 2021. He replaced that mostly with an increase in changeup usage (23.5% usage) and had only a .346 SLG against the pitch last season. Those 15 losses are certainly a concern as the Marlins don't figure to be a powerhouse in 2022, but there is still a lot to like about the 26-year-old just entering his prime.
With an ADP around pick 41, he figures to return value at that spot and should be looked at as a high-end SP2 or low-end SP1 if you want to start your draft with mostly hitters.
