Sammy Watkins Could Be Candidate For Pay Cut
5 years agoKansas City Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who is set to count $21 million against the salary cap with a base salary of $13.75 million (none of it guaranteed) in 2020, understands that the team may approach him about a pay cut or just cut him outright. The Chiefs would save $14 million in cap space with $7 million in dead money if they cut Watkins after the Super Bowl. The former fourth overall pick would be open to considering a pay cut if it kept him in town. Watkins produced a 1,000-yard season in his second year in the league, but he's become more of a complementary weapon at this stage of his career and is the third receiving option, at best, for KC, although he did step up in the AFC Championship for seven catches, 114 yards and a touchdown. The 100-yard game was just the second of the season for Watkins, with the other coming in the season opener when he scored three touchdowns against Jacksonville.
