Samaje Perine Operates As Lead Back Against Cardinals
1 year agoThe Denver Broncos held Javonte Williams (knee) out of their first preseason contest on Friday night against the Arizona Cardinals as he continues to recover from a season-ending knee injury last year. As a result, offseason signing Samaje Perine acted as the lead back for the starting offense and finished with a team-high six carries for 26 yards (4.3 yards per carry). He ripped off a long gain of 11 yards and was unable to haul in his only target in the passing game. The Broncos offense didn't really do anything impressive until their fourth drive, which culminated in a 21-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jerry Jeudy. Although Williams appears to be on track to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season against the Raiders, all indications are that Perine will be heavily involved early on to help ease Williams back. It gives the 27-year-old some RB3/4 appeal in fantasy drafts as Williams' handcuff.
