Ryan Weathers Building Up As Starter
4 years agoSan Diego Padres left-handed pitching prospect Ryan Weathers, who made his debut in the postseason against the Dodgers with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, is building toward a starter's workload in spring training and was the first pitcher to work multiple innings in a simulated game on Thursday. He used three pitches -- a fastball, changeup and slider -- to induce a few swings and misses and mostly weak contact. The 21-year-old is the team's No. 5 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and he could provide some valuable rotation depth in 2021. The young southpaw gained some velocity on his fastball last year, taking it into the upper-90s, but he's still young and can use some more development on the farm, especially given the team's pitching depth.
