Robert Whittaker was looking to earn a third crack at Israel Adesanya with a victory over Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 290 on Saturday. However, Whittaker suffered a second-round TKO loss, which dropped him to 1-2 in his last three fights. Whittaker was out-struck 41-23 in the first round and ended the opening frame on his back with Du Plessis landing ground-and-pound shots. In the second round, Du Plessis caught Whittaker with a counter that rocked him, and was he finished shortly thereafter. With the loss, Whittaker will likely have to fight someone ranked below him and will need a couple of wins in a row to get another title shot.--Cole Shelton
