The Pittsburgh Pirates won the first-ever draft lottery in order to get the top overall selection in the 2023 draft. With the top pick, they picked Paul Skenes, a 6'6" right-handed pitcher that transferred into Louisiana State and led the Tigers to the 2023 College World Series title. Skenes dominated college this year, winning the National Player of the Year, Dick Howser Award, and College World Series Most Outstanding Player after posting a 1.69 ERA and 0.75 WHIP over 122 2/3 innings, striking out 209, a LSU record.
